We all need something indulgent for moments in your life that require a little something special.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
HOW TO MAKE THE CINNAMON ROLLS
1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar.
Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This is the process of reactivating the yeast. The mixture will begin to bloom indicating it’s ready for use.
2. In a bowl mix the egg, milk, salt, sugar and melted butter.
Add in the flour, water, vanilla and the yeast mixture. Mix until it’s all incorporated. Knead the dough for about 5 – 8 minutes or until you have a smooth dough.
3. Oil a large bowl with some vegetable oil and set aside. Take the dough and form a ball in your hands.
Place it in the oiled bowl and oil the top of the dough with a little vegetable oil. Cover with plastic wrap or with a slightly damp kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot to rise for about 2 hours.
Letting your dough rest is crucial to the overall flavour and texture of the rolls.
4. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, granulated sugar and cinnamon for the filling and set aside. You could also added other preferred spices to the mixture.
5. When doubled in size, punch the dough down and roll it out onto a floured surface in to a 8″×5″ rectangle.
6. Spread the soft butter over the top and sprinkle evenly over the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Starting from one end, tightly roll the dough into a roll form.
7. Cut it into 7 to 8 even slices and place them in a well greased pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let place them in a warm spot to rise for another hour.
8. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 180˚C
9. Once risen, brush them with some melted butter and bake them for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.
TIPS FOR THIS RECIPE
- Measure your flour correctly. Adding too much flour is a common mistake which ruins the texture of the cinnamon rolls.
- Make sure to give your cinnamon rolls enough room to expand in the pan. Don’t crowd them together. If you crowd the rolls, they will not have that light airy texture we all love.
- Place your cinnamon rolls in a nice warm place to rise. If it’s a cold day warm your oven to a low temperature of around 100 F and let the rolls rise there.
- You will know you’re done kneading when the dough will be light and soft but will not stick to your fingers.
- More cinnamon and spices is always an option. You could always add in some cloves or all spice.
